Introducing the Beyond the Stage Instructors - Cathy Smith
Cathy started her dance training at the age of 8 and spent many happy years training with Heather Menzies Studio of Dance Arts, Toronto Dance Theatre and Camarata Dance Centre in all disciplines – tap, jazz, stage, modern, hip hop, lyrical and ballet. Performances over the years included: Canada’s Wonderland, Maple Leaf Gardens, CNE, Chin Music Awards, Chin Picnic, Ontario Place, Skydome and various venues in Toronto for Charity and Corporate Events. In 1993, Cathy bought the studio from her teacher and renamed it Studio of Dance and Performing Arts.
Cathy is a strong believer in paying it forward, so her dancers and staff spent many years performing for various charity events throughout Mississauga and the GTA such as Carassauga, Hazel’s Walk, Bread and Honey Festival, Senior Homes and Hospitals. The studio always hosted a Christmas Dinner Dance where all students performed. Monies raised were given to the Christmas Wish Fund and the Cancer Wing at Credit Valley Hospital.
The studio’s “Company” dancers and staff also performed for many corporate events such as: Old Timers Hockey Game, Opening of Living Arts Centre, Ontario Hydro, Frito Lay and Grand Opening of Krispy Kreme.
In 2000, the senior company travelled to Reisa Germany to represent Team Canada in the World’s Showcase category placing 4th overall out of 25 countries.
Cathy was an advisory board member of Meadowvale Theatre from 1997 until it disbanded. She was asked to sit on the board in part to represent the dance community. As a member of MTAB, Cathy was exposed to and made aware of the many other groups that use Meadowvale Theatre which is how she came about choreographing for the Encore Series.
Credits include: Guys and Dolls (CCMP), West Side Story (MMT), Side by Side by Sondheim (MTM), Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat (MMT), Evita (MMT), Footloose (MMT), Secret Garden (MMT), Grease (MMT) and Mary Poppins (MMT). Cathy has won several choreographer awards with the Encore Series and Act Co. Cathy has also had the pleasure to choreograph both the 25th Anniversary of Meadowvale Theatre and the Encore Series Celebrations.
Cathy is a strong advocate of community theatre and believes this should be a fun and positive experience for everyone involved. Now spending most of her time in the corporate world, her happy place is when she can dance and create. Cathy loves that community theatre allows people who may not have had the opportunity otherwise, learn to dance and be part of a show.
